Cairns Central and Lend Lease Retail are committed to delivering a sustainable future for all our stakeholders.

Cairns Central and Lend Lease believe in creating a future where the assets we create, own and manage enhance people’s lives and allow communities to prosper and acknowledge that achieving sustainability outcomes will deliver long term value for our investors, the environment and the communities in which we have a presence.

We are implementing a number of exciting initiatives as part of our commitment to sustainability, some of which are outlined below:
Cleaning Products
We take pride in our cleaning performance in the Centre. Where possible, Cairns Central strives to use environmentally friendly cleaning products.
Borewater Supply
To cut down on water use, borewater is extracted from two bores located under the Premises. Borewater is currently used for toilet flushing and within our cooling towers.
NABERS Ratings
The owners of Cairns Central are committed measuring the energy and water performance of its assets using the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS). Every year, NABERS Energy and Water ratings are calculated. The most recent ratings for Cairns Central are 4.5 Star NABERS Energy (good performance) and 3 Stars NABERS Water (average performance).
Energy and Water Efficiency
In 2020 a detailed energy and water efficiency audit of the Centre was undertaken. Several initiatives were identified through the audit and an Energy and Water Efficiency Plan has been developed. The plan details what measures will give us the most energy savings down to the smaller items. We intend to roll out as many measures over the current year to significantly reduce our consumption. Other measures that are not feasible over the current year will be implemented within the next few years. Reducing our energy and consumption is a strong focus at Cairns Central.
Coffee Cup Recycling
Australians use approximately 1 billion disposable coffee cups each year. While reusable cups are growing in popularity, many people still prefer the convenience of a takeaway cup. To help combat this growing waste problem, Cairns Central has partnered with Simply Cups, Australia's first coffee cup recycling program and have introduced five dedicated Coffee Cup Recycling Bins throughout the centre for our Retailers and Customers to support this war on waste and help make a positive difference to the environment. The two new recycling bins can be located near Coles and outside the Food Court. Since the Simply Cups recycling program began in April 2017, over 6 million cups have been diverted from landfill Nationally with this tally growing on a daily basis. Instead, Simply Cups have worked with innovators to transform the disposable cups into new products, including building materials, garden beds, bench seats and kerbing with more exciting product ranges to be announced in the coming months.
